Wee Treasures is a tiny shop housed in a cabinet at Kinning Park Antique Centre in Glasgow, offering pre-loved miniature furniture and accessories. A larger range of pieces is also available at Scottish toy and collectables fairs through the year. Established to meet the demand for an in-person miniatures shopping experience in Scotland, Wee Treasures seeks to prevent carefully curated collections from being discarded, and to find loving new homes for their contents through a combination of selling, upcycling and donating. “If you build it, they will come”. That was my thinking when I launched a tiny dolls house shop in Glasgow in the summer of 2025. I’d been searching for miniatures in Scotland ever since I acquired my very first house – a fabulous 1:24 creation by Top Toise of Selkirk based on a design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. While I knew the scale and style of my house meant I would be making most of the furniture myself, I was keen to see what other miniatures were available. My first visit to Miniatura was enough to convince me that perhaps my flat could accommodate one more house…

Visiting antique centres around Scotland, I asked some of the traders why they didn’t dedicate, say, a cabinet to dolls house pieces – after all, surely there must be plenty of wonderful collections to be found in attics? “They just get binned”, one man told me, and I winced in horror. “You wouldn’t be able to source enough stock to meet the demand,” said another. These assertions seemed contradictory – surely if once-treasured collections could be saved from the skip, they could be sold by a specialist trader? If there was demand, why not try to meet it?

Being politely told the idea was a non-starter turned out to be quite a powerful motivator. If I loved the idea of a dedicated space for pre-loved minis, might not other collectors? Yes, these days a dizzying range of dolls house furniture and accessories can be ordered online, but isn’t searching for wee treasures in person half the fun? Isn’t it better to be able to see items up close, and be inspired by spotting something quirky by chance?

Visiting my local antique centre, I overheard the owner mention that he was planning to trial shelf-by-shelf rentals for cabinets. It was the perfect option for me – and so Wee Treasures was born. I built it, and to my delight people came, somehow discovering my tiny little corner of what quickly grew into Glasgow’s largest antique centre, housing dealers from all over Scotland.

I perhaps have a better idea now of why others were reluctant to become miniatures specialists – it’s certainly a labour of love, cleaning each individual piece of dust and tacky wax, carrying out small repairs where needed or adding imperfect items to my “box of hope” due to their lack of a drawer, knob, handle or other essential part. (Will I one day come across the perfect replacement? I live in hope! I’ve already salvaged some spares from the few pieces I’ve deemed damaged beyond use.)

It’s a great privilege to handle every collection that a fellow miniatures lover has thoughtfully put together. As I go through the pieces I wonder, did they buy all these items for themselves, or perhaps receive some as gifts? Did they pick up special treasures on travels abroad, or maybe source them at fairs like Miniatura? Perhaps some were specially commissioned, or already secondhand when this owner added them to their collection. The thought of them going on to find loving new homes fills me with such delight.

The generosity of collection donors has also boosted the coffers of a local charity, Starter Packs Glasgow, which provides essentials for people moving into new tenancies after experiencing homelessness or other disadvantage. I love the idea that the sale of mini pieces can help fund full-sized equivalents.
