Ken and Linda Batty first got into dolls house miniatures back in 2006 when Ken bought Linda a dolls house for her birthday. After attending some dolls house fairs, they realised there was a niche market for one of a kind table and standard lamps. The couple set about creating such items, exhibiting for the first time in 2008 – not knowing what the reaction would be to their range of miniatures.

Ken said, “Our stand displayed standard and table lamps, tables and other small turned items. The reaction was exhilarating!”

Their range expanded, often in response to customer requests, suggestions and sometimes simply because Ken likes a challenge! They now make traditional, modern, Art Deco and Tiffany style lamps as well as other collectable items and accessories from local and exotic woods, Corian, acrylics and resins in 1/12 and 1/24 scales.

They are turned, by Ken, on a full-size woodturning lathe, and are wholly turned or have at least one turned component. Then, using her artistic talents, Linda paints, decorates and finishes the miniatures.

Ken added, “I had learned to turn at school as a boy but did not take it up again till retirement, occasionally turning full size pieces but mainly miniatures. My working life was in the Royal Navy and NHS, and latterly I’ve found time to do some local voluntary work.”

Whatever Ken is working on, he enjoys the whole procedure. The couple have also introduced LED technology and battery power and are always developing their own ideas. Ken added, “Each miniature is a one of a kind so each one is a favourite as I’m working on it. In some cases, it is a shame to have to sell them. I have also been commissioned to make a few bespoke pieces.”

At first Ken and Linda were attending around 22 fairs a year but since relocation and major surgery on Ken’s spine they tend to exhibit only at Miniatura, York and Stafford these days. They welcome any requests and suggestions from customers. So please get in touch by phone or email.
