I’m Joao Coelho, a Portuguese artist based in St. Helens, Merseyside, creating highly detailed miniature dioramas inspired by forgotten architecture, weathered facades, and cultural memory.
I focus on recreating shopfronts and everyday buildings, the kind of spaces people often walk past without a second glance, but which hold so many personal stories.

My work started in 2021, when I built my first miniature façade from recycled cardboard and scrap wood. It was meant to be a one-off project, but it quickly became a full-blown passion.

Alongside original diorama art pieces, I now specialise in commissions, recreating meaningful places in miniature for customers across the UK and beyond. From childhood homes and family shops to wedding venues and beloved pubs, each commission tells a unique story. I love working closely with clients to capture every detail and create something deeply personal that can be treasured for years.

Each piece is made in my home studio using recycled and repurposed materials wherever possible. Depending on the complexity and level of detail, a commission can take anywhere from 20 to 60 hours. I use a wide mix of tools, fine sculpting tools, craft knives, and painting techniques to replicate textures like flaking paint, rust, aged brickwork, and old signage.

When researching commissions, I rely on photographs, street views, and conversations with clients to bring the space to life. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of what I do, turning someone’s memories into something tangible. I also regularly exhibit and sell at art shows and miniature events. The in-person feedback is always lovely, and people are often amazed at how something so small can evoke such strong emotions or memories.
