Miniatures and I
I made my first dollhouse when I was eight or nine years old out of old apple crates and household detritus – fabric, yarn, bottle caps, cards, gifts boxes, wood scraps and almost anything that wasn’t nailed down. Initially I mixed flour with water to make my own paste and was thrilled when I got a bottle of Elmer’s Glue. I spent hours in the toy aisle of the Kress Department Store as they carried a selection of miniature accessories for ten cents each.
As an adult I started serious miniature making following the birth of my second child and it has given me an unending supply of happiness ever since. I started selling at shows when I was making more than I could find room for in my house. My husband asked me if I would just please leave him room on the dining room table for his dinner plate as it seemed to be permanently covered with crafting materials.
I love miniatures because I enjoy the creative challenge and the relaxation of being totally focused on a project. I love being able to work with an endless variety of materials – fabric, wood, leather, clay, silk thread, etc. I also love the camaraderie of miniaturists and enjoy and appreciate every person who stops by my table just to say hi
