Toni Malin of Smallsorts Dolls first got into making dolls house dolls when she joined a group called the British Miniatura Doll Guild. When that folded she continued to make her character dolls which she sells at dolls house fairs throughout the year with the assistance of husband John – including of course at Miniatura.

Smallsorts which is based in Barnsley also makes some dolls house accessories and witchy/spooky items. All Toni’s dolls are brimming with personality and character, and the various dressers and bureaus she makes are delightfully cluttered with personal possessions that tell the story of who lives there. There’s Vic the vicar with his cup of tea, Edward looking rather distinguished, Flo at the pub, Norma, the old girl gossiping over the garden fence, and many more wonderful character dolls.

It was through the British Miniature Doll Guild that Toni met Jane Timm of Thimblemins and a great friendship sprang up. The pair, whose stalls you will generally find back to back at Miniatura keep in touch all year round via IPad technology.

Toni says: “While we live miles apart we have the IPads on all day as we’re working, and it’s just like working in the same room. Sometimes we might not be talking, just getting on with our work, but this keeps you going as it feels like you’re working together. It’s really nice.”

Toni adds that Miniatura is their favourite show. “We love the buzz, and it’s not all about the money it’s about seeing people you haven’t seen all year, seeing each other, and a weekend away!”
